A New Chapter in India’s Publishing Story

0

In a country where stories are finding their way back into everyday life, sometimes the most important narratives are the ones unfolding quietly behind the scenes. As reading in India steadily accelerates, fuelled by vibrant community gatherings, literature festivals, and grassroots movements, an equally compelling story is being written in the world of publishing logistics.

Across cities and towns, literary festivals and book-centric communities are reintroducing reading to the masses, transforming it from a solitary act into a shared cultural experience. For younger audiences, especially school-age readers, initiatives such as Are You Lit Youth, an offshoot of Are You Lit, have reshaped reading habits in Gurugram over the past five years, nurturing curiosity and deeper engagement with books. As demand for books grows, so does the need for a seamless ecosystem that ensures stories reach readers faster and more efficiently.

It is within this evolving landscape that Penguin Random House India has announced a strategic partnership with Simon & Schuster India, a collaboration that signals a new chapter in India’s publishing infrastructure.

Sanjiv Gupta, Managing Director, Simon & Schuster India, said, “PRHI’s state-of-the-art warehousing infrastructure and proven operational expertise give us great confidence in delivering faster and more reliable service to our customers and partners.”

As India Reads More, the Engines Behind Books Grow Stronger

Under this partnership, Penguin Random House India will manage end-to-end warehousing and logistics for Simon & Schuster India, covering everything from in-warding and storage to order processing, packaging, returns, and last-mile delivery. While such operational details often remain behind the curtain, they are, in truth, the invisible threads that bind the reading experience together. Amit Abrol, CFO and SVP Operations & Technology, Penguin Random House India, said, ‘This partnership marks an important step in our journey to build a scalable and future-ready supply chain for the publishing industry.

At the heart of this collaboration lies PRHI’s expansive, state-of-the-art warehouse in Dasna, Uttar Pradesh. Spread across 145,000 square feet, with the capacity to store over 12 million units and ship nearly 2.5 million units a month, the facility is designed for both scale and speed. Handling approximately 15 million units annually and built to grow even further, it stands as a testament to the increasing demand for books in India. Notably, PRHI remains the only international trade publisher in the country to operate its own warehousing infrastructure, setting a benchmark for efficiency and reliability.

This partnership is more than an operational alliance; it reflects a broader shift in how publishing is evolving in India. With consolidated shipments, faster turnaround times, and improved service reliability, both organisations are poised to benefit from significant efficiencies and economies of scale. It also marks a key step in PRHI’s ambition to expand its third-party logistics (3PL) business, following similar collaborations with global players like Pearson.

As India’s reading culture continues to gather momentum, from buzzing literature festivals to youth-driven reading movements, the importance of a robust supply chain becomes ever more critical. In the end, every book begins its journey long before it reaches a reader’s hands. And partnerships like this ensure that the journey is not just efficient but future-ready, keeping pace with a nation rediscovering the joy of reading.
