The Fine Print of Being Healthy
It’s Sunday, as usual
I have discovered that trying to be healthy can be very unhealthy for peace of mind.
We have become very serious about our health. Almost dangerously serious.
We count steps, protein, calories. We measure sleep.
We analyse our body’s data and check our weight every morning like stock prices.
Health has become the new religion. Only the rituals are more complicated.
We used to have five senses. Now we have five apps telling us that we are supposed to sleep better, eat better, breathe better, walk better and recover better.
Our ancient yoga wisdom is now low-impact cardio.
The “phoren” wellness industry keeps sending us new assignments.
Cold plunge from Scandinavia.
Pilates from wherever.
HIIT.
Keto.
Intermittent fasting.
Cryotherapy.
Red-light therapy.
And then there are supplements with names nobody can pronounce.
We are eating avocado that tastes like homework.
The bigger problem is that research can’t seem to make up its mind either.
Dairy is essential.
Dairy is inflammatory.
Meat is protein.
Meat is controversial.
Cold showers are the answer.
Apparently, the question is still being researched.
At this rate, even breathing may need a second opinion.
Maybe we’ve taken this too far.
I don’t want a wellness retreat to teach me how to breathe.
I don’t want an app to congratulate me for sleeping.
I don’t want my breakfast to come with a performance report.
And I would just like to live.
OTR Footnotes:
Thankfully, my chai has survived centuries without a clinical trial.
Avocado remains innocent until proven tasty.
Tai chi: Because apparently even standing needs technique
Last Sip:
Pigeons walk as if they pay rent.
