Beyond the Pour: The art of a great cocktail
From precision pouring and flavour profiling to creative cocktail-making, the Ultimate Bartender Championship celebrates the skill, individuality and craft shaping India’s contemporary bar culture.
A great cocktail is more than a mix of ingredients. It is a balance of flavours, technique and creativity, with a bartender’s skill turning every pour into an experience. To celebrate this craft, Monkey Shoulder, the premium blended malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, Scotland, is taking its ninth Ultimate Bartender Championship across India.
The Bengaluru round, held at Pangeo, brought together more than 150 bartenders for a high-energy showcase of speed, precision and service. Hosted by Vidit Mantri, Brand Ambassador at Monkey Shoulder India, the competition tested essential behind-the-bar skills, from pouring and nosing to industry knowledge, service and the ability to craft the perfect serve under pressure.
After all, bartending is as much about understanding the science of a drink as it is about flair. The right balance, dilution and temperature can transform a cocktail, while a bartender’s individual style gives it character.
Ashwin of Bar Spirit Forward and Sushan of Dali & Gala emerged as the Bengaluru finalists. Meanwhile, the Delhi NCR round has already concluded in Aerocity, with three finalists, Mayank and Krish of Botai, and Sachin of Upside Bar, making the cut. Jaipur is next on the route as the championship continues its journey across the country.
The India finalists will compete for the opportunity to represent the country at the World Ultimate Bartender Championship Global Final, expected to take place in December.
“Creativity behind the bar has the greatest impact when it is supported by sound technique,” says Vidit Mantri, underlining the championship’s emphasis on refining skills while encouraging bartenders to challenge familiar approaches.
As cocktail culture evolves, bartending is becoming as much about creativity and personality as precision, turning the bar into a space for experimentation and discovery. Whether it is a thoughtful twist on a classic or an unexpected combination of flavours, the best serves often reflect the personality of the person behind the bar.
